Cambridge Children’s will provide a base for a huge variety of research into the mental and physical health of children and young people. Researchers at the Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge University are currently learning more about how people build up resilience to overcome childhood trauma and adversity. This is an area of great interest to the new children’s hospital, which will address major health challenges such as preventing suicide, currently the leading cause of death in young people aged 16-19.
It is common for children to experience trauma or adversity, either through a single event like a car crash or sexual assault or as an ongoing issue such as a parent’s illness or longer term deprivation. For some people this leads to a minor setback, before recovering and moving on with their lives. However, people who have experienced trauma or adversity in childhood are more likely to go on to develop mental ill health, which can lead to issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts.
Psychiatry PhD student, Jes Fritz recently conducted a research project examining which factors can help reduce stress and prevent mental health problems. She identified 10 resilience factors including community factors (e.g. social support), family factors (e.g. family cohesion and support), and individual-level factors (e.g. self-esteem or distress tolerance). The study was conducted amongst people aged 14 and aged 17 who had experienced childhood adversity and control groups of the same age who had not. Specifically, she measured mean levels of resilience factors, interrelations between resilience factors and pathways between resilience factors and distress.
The results showed that in both age groups, those who had experienced childhood adversity had lower levels of resilience factors than those who had not. However, the resilience factors in those aged 14 who had experienced childhood adversity were less positively interrelated than in those who were not exposed to childhood adversity. At age 17 the interrelations of the resilience factors did not differ between groups of adolescents with and without adversity. Thus childhood adversity seems to have a pronounced effect on resilience factors at age 14 and perhaps less so on resilience factors at age 17. Over time there was little change in both groups. This may help explain why exposure to childhood trauma or adversity often has a lasting effect.

Cambridge Children’s will integrate mental and physical health provision and research to provide young people and their parents with complete and seamless care according to their individual needs. Researchers and clinicians will work together to address major health challenges including poor mental health, rare diseases, extremely pre-term births, cancer and obesity and diabetes.
