Healthcare professionals further consider options for inpatient space at Cambridge Children’s Hospital

Cambridge Children’s Hospital has brought experts together for a second workshop on how one of the inpatient spaces in the new facility can support gaps in care provision.

Last December, 45 stakeholders from 11 organisations—including clinical specialists and regional and national commissioners—came together to discuss potential service models for children and young people with complex physical and mental health conditions. The discussions confirmed a significant unmet need, as many experience inadequate support in current settings – some in acute beds, some even bedbound at home - leading to deteriorating conditions, prolonged hospital stays, and frequent readmissions.

From that 'Bridging the Gap' workshop, four potential areas of need were identified, with discussions centring on integrating care pathways and exploring a mental health focused staffing model. The delegates came back together this week to consider these options, looking at how this inpatient space could address longstanding needs and deliver regional efficiencies.

We are grateful to everyone who attended these workshops for sharing their expertise and helping us plan how this valuable space at Cambridge Children’s Hospital can be used to offer maximum benefit for children and young people.
