High Sheriff visits site of new Cambridge Children’s Hospital

The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire visited the site of Cambridge Children’s Hospital, the new specialist hospital for the East of England.

The Hon Frances Stanley DL, who is also a regional ambassador for the Children’s Hospital campaign, met clinical and project staff to hear about the progress of the project, which will break down the divide between mental and physical health and deliver joined-up care under one roof.

The project is a collaborative partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) and the University of Cambridge, bringing together clinical expertise and world-leading knowledge.

The High Sheriff remarked on what a special and vital facility Cambridge Children’s Hospital will be for children and families across the East of England region.

Following the completion of the groundworks and archaeological dig on the site on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, opposite the Rosie Hospital, the Project team appointed its construction partner Bouygues UK in summer 2025. Work on the final stage of the design process and the project’s Full Business Case is underway, ahead of full construction starting in 2027.

The High Sheriff also visited one of the general children’s wards at Addenbrooke’s Hospital to meet staff and patients, and to learn more about the opportunities the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital provides including: new integrated wards, single occupancy bedrooms, seven dedicated paediatric theatres, a hospital school, and outdoor spaces throughout all levels of the hospital, including a large garden and playground area.

The five-storey 35,000sqm hospital will also house University of Cambridge research institutes focussed on understanding the origins of disease, supporting earlier detection, intervention and prevention of illnesses.
